Life is so noisy. Noise can be literal and also figurative. Meetings, the sound of horns, phones ringing, text notifications, kids or adults talking or calling you by name. The cumulative effect can be stressful to the mind and body.
Just get away
There are endless ways to get away from the noise. You can:
- get away to the mountains or to the ocean
- go on a walk or run without listening to music or audiobooks
- go hiking
- read your favorite book
- escape into your closet away from everyone
- practice mindfulness
Kristie Lemmon is a good family friend and a practicing Family Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Part of her practice is teaching about getting away from the noise with various techniques and skills including mindfulness. Mindfulness has three important effects on the mind: 1) it helps you to be kind to and patient with yourself, 2) it helps you focus your mind on the present, forgetting the past and not worrying about the future, 3) and finally, it helps you better manage your emotions so you don’t have the highs and lows. Mindfulness is an amazingly simple yet effective way of letting go of the noise.
